Roland’s Sand Channel
School Readers · Level 14
Roland and Clifton dig two shallow basins in the beach sand with Mum. They join them with a narrow channel. They hope a cup of water will travel from one basin to the other.

Clifton pours slowly. The water spreads into the sand before reaching the far basin. Roland waits beside the empty end. He wonders whether a faster pour would make the journey work.

Mum suggests testing a small amount before carrying more water. They watch a second cup soak into the loose grains. The channel is damp, but no stream moves along it.

Roland remembers a smooth strip of spare pond liner in their beach craft bag. Mum helps lay it along the channel. She presses the flexible material gently into the sandy hollow.

They tuck the liner’s edges beneath a little sand to hold it in place. Clifton checks that its far end reaches the second basin. Then he picks up their cup.

This time the water runs over the smooth strip and reaches Roland’s basin. The boys follow its path with their eyes. They can see a change without making a larger channel.

They swap pouring jobs and send another cup along the same route. Mum asks why the liner helped. Clifton explains that it kept the water from soaking away so quickly.

Before leaving, they remove the liner and fill in the shallow basins. They collect every item. “Our river needed a lining,” says Roland. He rolls the strip into the bag for another day.
