Rosie’s Changed Outing
Shared Reading Books · Social Stories · Ages 5–8
Rosie has packed her library bag for the class walk. She wants to borrow a book about foxes. Adam has brought his card too. Their coats are ready when Mr Dale gets a message from the library.

A burst pipe has closed the building for the morning. The class cannot visit today. Rosie looks at her empty bag. “But it is library day,” she says. The change feels much bigger than the small bag in her hand.

Mr Dale explains what he knows and what he does not know yet. He cannot promise a new date. Rosie can sit nearby while the class puts the coats away. Adam stays with her and shows her the fox on his bag.

When Rosie is ready, Mr Dale offers two choices: explore the classroom animal books or help plan questions for another visit. Rosie chooses the books. She and Adam find a fox photograph they have never noticed before.

They make a small paper marker to keep the page. Rosie still wishes they had gone to the library. Finding something interesting has not made that wish disappear. Both things can be true while they look at the photograph together.

Before lunch, Rosie puts the marker in her bag. She feels more settled because she knows today’s plan. Mr Dale will tell the class when he has news about another visit. Rosie does not have to work out the whole week now.
