Sophie’s Old Key
Shared Reading Books · Social Science · Year 2
Sophie found a large key in Gran’s button tin. It was heavier than the key to their front door. “What did this open?” she asked. Gran turned it over. “That key has a garden story,” she said.

They walked to the little building behind the house. Sophie knew it as Gran’s painting room. Long ago, Gran explained, it had been a shed for tools. The old key had fitted its wooden door.

Sophie tried to imagine the room without paint and paper. Gran showed her a photograph of tools hanging inside. There was a spade where the easel stood now. The same space had once had a different use.

“Why did you change it?” Sophie asked. Gran no longer needed all those tools, and she wanted somewhere bright to paint. Dad had helped repair the window. An adult had fitted a new lock, so the old key no longer worked.

The room was not the only thing that had changed. In the photograph, the apple tree was shorter. Sophie stood near it and looked up at its branches. The tree had grown while people used the building in different ways.

Gran shared a memory of planting beside the shed. Sophie wrote down a few words with Dad’s help. She added a drawing of the room today. The photograph, memory and drawing each showed a different part of the story.

Back in the kitchen, Sophie put the key on the table beside her pictures. It could not open the new lock, but it could help start a conversation. Gran was pleased Sophie had asked before throwing it away.

At home, Sophie told Dad about the room’s old job and new job. Places could change as people’s needs changed. She had walked past Gran’s painting room many times. Now she could imagine part of its past.
