Stephen’s Team Flag
School Readers · Level 9
Stephen and Martin make a yellow flag for their team game. They stand its short pole in a pot beside the starting line.

The first runners arrive, and a breeze blows across the field. The flag leans over until its pole slides out of the pot.

Stephen catches it before it falls onto the path. “We need it to stand up on its own,” he says.

Their teacher asks them to look inside the pot. It is empty, so there is nothing to hold the pole in place.

Martin brings some small smooth stones from the garden tray. Stephen holds the pole upright while Martin puts the stones around it.

They step back and watch the flag in the next breeze. Although the cloth flutters, the pole stays safely upright.

Now each team can spot where the game begins. Stephen and Martin take turns welcoming runners to the starting line.

At the end, they return the stones and put the flag away. Their teacher thanks them for finding a useful way to help the whole group.
