Susan’s Apple Stall
School Readers · Level 9
Susan and Joan set up a little apple stall in Grandma’s orchard. They wash the apples and put them in a shallow basket.

Joan lifts one side of the basket to move it along the table. Two apples roll over the low edge and land in the grass.

Susan picks them up and takes them back to Grandma to wash again. “We need to stop the apples rolling,” she says.

Grandma gives them a clean green cloth for the basket. The girls fold it so the middle is lower than the sides.

They place the apples in the soft hollow they have made. Joan carefully tilts the basket a little, and the apples stay inside.

Susan shows her little brother how to choose an apple. “Lift it gently, and leave the basket flat,” she tells him.

The family gathers beside the stall for a snack. Susan passes out apples while Joan brings cups of water.

Afterwards, they carry the empty basket back to the house. Their cloth-lined basket has kept the apples ready for everyone to enjoy.
