The Bike Bell
School Readers · Level 11
Finn and Amelia get their bikes ready for a school ride. They put on helmets and check with their teacher, Ms Hall. Finn rings his bell. It makes a clear sound.

Amelia tries her bell, but it only clicks. She tries once more. “That does not sound right,” she says. Finn looks at the handlebar beside it.

A strap from Amelia’s bag lies against the bell. “I think this is stopping it,” says Finn. Amelia lifts the strap away. She rings the bell again, and this time it sounds clear.

Amelia moves the bag to the basket. Ms Hall helps her secure it so it will not move. They check that the bell and brakes are free. “Now I am ready,” says Amelia.

The group follows the teacher along a quiet cycle path. Amelia uses her bell before passing a walker. She slows down and leaves plenty of space. The walker smiles as she goes past.

After the ride, Finn and Amelia park their bikes. “One little strap made a big difference,” says Finn. Amelia looks at her bag in the basket. “I am glad we checked before setting off.”
