The Bridge Challenge

School Readers · Level 15 · Realistic fiction

Reading together

This original reader is intended for students aged 11–20 who benefit from accessible text. It uses short paragraphs, familiar vocabulary, past tense and dialogue, with a clear problem and several attempts to solve it. Level 15 is an intended difficulty, not a formal PM assessment. Reading age 6½–7 is an approximate guide to text difficulty, not the age or maturity of the reader. Match the book to the student’s decoding and comprehension.

Before reading

Introduce Jack, Rose and Daniel. Read the title and discuss what a model bridge must do. Practise bridge, strip, fold, slipped and tested. Look at real card, a fold and a toy car if these words are unfamiliar.

During reading

Introduce unfamiliar character names and useful topic words before reading. Help the student blend unfamiliar words using letter–sound patterns they have learned. Explain a word with an untaught pattern, then reread the sentence. Use illustrations to discuss meaning and check understanding; do not ask students to guess printed words from pictures. These School Readers are not a phonics-sequenced decodable programme.

Pause after each test. Ask what happened, why the friends changed their plan, and what they could try next. Distinguish what the words tell us from what we can infer. Help with a new word, then reread the whole sentence for meaning. Use Talk Together for a prompt on each page.

After reading

What must their bridge do? Why does the car slide down? Why does Rose want a new plan? What idea does the leaf give Rose? What works now, and what still needs fixing? Why do they tape the ends? Why is it useful to talk about a test that did not work? What could the younger student try?

Reading-age guide

Levels 1–20 describe this library’s editorial progression. Reading-age ranges are approximate orientation guides, not tested scores or automatic equivalents to PM, Oxford Levels or Reading Recovery. Choose a book by listening to the student read and checking fluency and understanding. Match the characters and subject matter to the student’s age and interests separately from text difficulty.

Activities

Eleven question cards cover recall, cause and effect, “why”, feelings, word meaning, inference and prediction. Students can return to the story for evidence. Explore five vocabulary words, build them from movable letters, arrange three story pictures and retell the story in their own way.
