The Cake Sale
School Readers · Level 10
Lucy and Nathan have a cake stall at the school fair. They put cakes on a tray. Miss Green helps them set up. “Now we are ready,” says Lucy.

People walk past the stall. No one stops. Nathan looks at the full tray. “Do they know these cakes are for sale?” he asks.

Lucy looks at the front of the table. Their sign is flat on top. People cannot see it as they walk past. “We need to put it up,” she says.

Nathan finds a clip. Lucy holds the sign at the front of the stall. Nathan clips it in place. Miss Green checks that it will stay up.

A student stops and reads the sign. “Can I buy two cakes?” he asks. Lucy puts them in a paper bag. Nathan takes the money and says, “Thank you.”

More people stop at the stall. The tray is almost empty. “That sign helped,” says Lucy. “And we helped each other,” says Nathan. Miss Green smiles at them.
