The Ferry Window
School Readers · Level 12
Sarah and Lewis are going to an island with their school group. Sarah hopes to see seals from the ferry. She sits by a window and looks out at the sea.

The window is covered in small drops of water. Sarah rubs the glass with her sleeve, but the drops do not move. “They must be on the outside,” says Lewis.

Sarah moves to another seat. The glass is clear, but a tall wall blocks the view. “I will miss the seals,” she says. Lewis looks around the cabin.

Their teacher, Mrs Bell, points to the seats at the front. “Try those,” she says. “Stay inside while the ferry is moving.” Sarah and Lewis move their bags and sit down.

Now they can see the rocks beside the island. Lewis spots a grey shape. “Is that a seal?” he asks. Sarah looks closely. Then the shape lifts its head!

Two more seals slide into the sea. Sarah watches until the ferry reaches the island. “I am glad we found a better seat,” she says. Lewis smiles. “And I am glad that rock moved!”
