The Giant’s Footprints
Phase 9 · Book 2Focus soft c and g; silent kn, wr and mb

Alice and George walk in the woods with Mum. They find a giant footprint in the soft mud. Next to it is a note. “Follow the giant,” Mum reads.

George kneels beside the print. “It is bigger than my boot!” he says. Alice notices another print by a fence. They follow the trail with Mum.

The prints stop beside a fallen branch. “Has the giant flown away?” asks George. Alice finds a written clue under a stone. It shows a gentle bend in the path.

Round the bend, a smiling ranger waves. She holds two wooden feet with straps. “I made the prints,” she says. George gives a thumbs-up. “A wooden giant!”

The ranger shows them a little woodland stage. A giant puppet waits behind a curtain. Alice knocks on its wooden knee. “May we meet the giant?” she asks.

The curtain opens and the puppet bows. Its enormous hat slips over its eyes. Alice and George laugh with Mum. “The giant needs a smaller hat!” says George.
