The Hilltop Kite Game
Phase 5 · Book 4Focus -er and -est

Ella and Luke take a kite up the hill. Dad is their helper. Ella holds the string. Luke gives the kite a lift.

The kite dips and spins. Its cloth tail is short. “Let’s try a longer tail,” says Luke. Dad brings three cloth strips.

The red strip is long. The blue strip is longer. The yellow strip is the longest. Ella ties on the longest strip.

The kite lifts, then drops. “The longest tail is too heavy,” says Ella. They try the shorter blue strip. Dad checks the knot.

Now the kite flies higher! Luke is the runner. Ella holds the string. They swap turns. “The biggest tail is not always best!” says Dad.
