The Last Bus
School Readers · Level 10
Beth and Adam leave school late. They walk to the bus stop. A bus turns the corner and drives away. “Was that our bus?” asks Beth.

Adam looks at the board by the stop. “The next bus comes at four,” he says. Beth looks at her watch. It is ten minutes to four.

“I thought it was the last bus,” says Beth. Adam points to the board. “There is one more,” he says. They sit on the bench to wait.

Beth phones her mum. “We missed the first bus,” she says. “We are waiting for the next one.” Mum says, “Thanks for telling me.”

At four, a bus stops. Beth checks the number on the front. “This is ours,” she says. They show their passes and get on.

Beth and Adam sit together. “We did not miss the last bus,” says Beth. “We checked,” says Adam. Beth smiles as the bus sets off.
