The Library Box
School Readers · Level 15
Kate and Miles are sorting books for the school library sale. People have donated more than they expected. Kate fills a large box with paperbacks, and Miles checks that none of the covers are torn. The sale tables are in the next room.

Kate bends to lift the full box, then stops. It hardly moves. “I thought paperbacks would be light,” she says. Miles looks inside. All those paperbacks have made a heavy load.

They ask Mrs Fox for help instead of trying to carry it together. She brings a small library trolley. “First, let us make the load easier to handle,” she says. Kate finds two smaller boxes while Miles clears some space on the table.

They divide the books between the smaller boxes. Kate puts the heaviest books at the bottom, keeping the piles low. Mrs Fox helps them load the trolley. They keep the boxes low, so they can see the route ahead.

Miles opens the door to the next room. A stack of empty boxes is blocking part of the corridor. Kate stops the trolley before it reaches them. They move the empty boxes to the storage space Mrs Fox has shown them.

Now the way is clear. Kate pushes slowly, while Miles walks beside her. Mrs Fox holds the next door open. They take the books to the sale tables without spilling any. Moving the books no longer feels so awkward.

They sort the books into stories, sport and hobbies. Miles finds a book about drawing cars and keeps looking at the cover. Kate points to the sale sign. “You can come back as a customer later,” she says. He laughs and puts it on the table.

When the room is ready, Kate returns the trolley to Mrs Fox. She has moved every book without carrying the heavy box. Asking for equipment and making smaller loads took a little time, but it helped them finish the job well.
