The Library Window Display
Shared Reading Books · Stories · Year 2Narrative

Mr Lee asked Sofia and Ben to help make a library window display. “This month we are sharing stories about journeys,” he said. Sofia drew a bus. Ben drew a boat. They wanted people outside to stop and look.

They placed their drawings behind the window and added five books. Sofia stood outside with Mr Lee to check. “I can see the books,” she said, “but our pictures are hidden behind them.” Inside, Ben moved a drawing higher.

Now the drawing covered a book. Ben frowned. “If we keep moving things, something else gets hidden.” Mr Lee gave them a large sheet of paper. “Could you plan the whole space before changing it?”

They sketched the window as a big rectangle. “Books at the bottom,” Sofia suggested. “Pictures above them,” said Ben. “And a path joining everything.” They drew a winding line across their plan.

Sofia made a paper road. Ben made a blue paper river. They joined the road and river with a small paper bridge. Mr Lee placed the books on low stands. The children arranged their pictures using the plan.

Outside, Ben checked the display with Mr Lee. “The pale bus is hard to see,” he said. Sofia added a dark outline around it. Ben held up a darker boat. This time both pictures stood out.

A family stopped by the window. A little girl followed the paper path with her finger on the glass. “Where does that journey go?” she asked. “Into a story,” said Mr Lee, opening the library door.

Sofia and Ben looked at their finished display. “We had to see it from outside,” said Sofia. “And plan how the pieces fit,” added Ben. They left a space for next week’s new book. Their journey display could keep growing.
