The Moonlit Footprints
Phase 8 · Book 3Focus oo: moon and book sounds

Lucy and Tom camp in a field with Dad. They read a book by the tent. The moon rises over the trees. Dad sets their muddy boots by a wooden stool.

In the morning, Lucy looks outside. Small prints cross the soft mud. They lead towards the boots. “Who came to our camp?” she asks.

Tom looks for clues with Dad. One boot is tipped on its side. Something rustles beside it. “Could it be a tiny dragon?” whispers Tom.

They step back and look again. A hedgehog sniffs the empty boot. Its round body is covered in prickles. “It is looking for a way through,” says Dad.

Dad moves the stool to clear the path. The hedgehog walks towards the hedge. They stay still and let it go. “No dragon, then,” says Tom.

Lucy draws the prints in their book. Tom draws a dragon in a huge boot. Dad laughs at the picture. “Some clues make a good story too!” he says.
