The Poster Colours
School Readers · Level 13
Frances and Victor are making a poster for a school music evening. Frances paints a dark blue background. Victor writes the details on pale yellow paper. They want people to notice the time and place.

They pin the poster to a board and step back. The title is clear, but the smaller details are hard to read. Frances moves closer. “I can read them here,” she says. “Not everyone will stand this close.”

Victor checks the letters on the yellow paper. They are small and light grey. “We need darker letters,” he says. He writes the details again with a thick black pen on a larger piece.

They replace the small paper and step back once more. Now the words stand out clearly. Frances asks a student walking past to read the time. The student answers without moving closer.

Their teacher checks the details before the poster goes up. The date, time and room are all right. Frances and Victor place it on the busy entrance board. Several students stop to look.

At the music evening, one visitor points to the poster. “That helped me find the room,” she says. Victor smiles at Frances. “A poster needs more than nice colours,” he says. “It needs to be easy to read.”
