The Quiet Recording
School Readers · Level 14
Grace and Owen are recording a welcome message for the school library. Grace has written three sentences. Owen sets the microphone on the table. They want new students to feel welcome when they arrive.

Grace reads the message clearly. Then they listen with headphones. A loud thump comes after the first sentence. Grace stops the recording. “That was not in my message,” she says.

Owen looks under the table. His bag has fallen against a chair. They move it onto a spare seat. Grace reads again. This time, shouts from the court come through the open window.

“We could shout too,” says Owen. Grace shakes her head. “Then the message would sound cross.” They ask the librarian if they can use the small room beside the shelves. It has a door they can close.

Inside the room, Owen puts the microphone on a soft mat. Grace sits near it, without touching the table. Owen closes the door gently. For a moment, they both listen to the quiet.

Grace reads the message once more. She leaves a short pause between the sentences. Owen waits before pressing stop. They listen together. This time they can hear every word, with no sudden thumps.

The librarian listens too. “That sounds friendly,” she says. Grace smiles. They save the new recording with a clear name. Then Owen checks that it will play on the library tablet.

Next morning, the message is ready for new students. Grace points Owen towards the tablet and gives a small wave. They have made a quiet welcome, but it has taken a lot of listening.
