The Radio Surprise
School Readers · Level 12
Robert and Nancy are making a show for the school radio. They have chosen a song and a short weather report. Robert holds the microphone while Nancy checks their notes.

Nancy presses the record button. Robert reads the report in a clear voice. When they play it back, they hear a loud tapping sound. “What was that?” asks Nancy.

They record a second time, but the tapping returns. Robert looks at the window. There is no rain. Nancy listens again and watches his hands.

Robert is tapping a pencil on the desk as he reads. “I did not notice I was doing that,” he says. He puts the pencil in a pot away from the microphone.

This time the report sounds clear. Nancy adds the song at the end. They let their teacher listen before sharing the show. “You found the problem yourselves,” she says.

At lunch, their class hears the show. Robert grins when his clear voice fills the room. Nancy gives him a smile. “The pencil can stay in the pot for our next show,” she says.
