The Rainy Match Plan
School Readers · Level 14
Aaron puts the cones on the school court. His class has planned a football game. Priya brings the ball. Dark clouds are moving over the school, but the court is still dry.

Rain begins before the teams are ready. The court soon looks wet. Ms Hill calls everyone inside. Aaron carries the cones to the hall. He feels cross. He has waited all week for this game.

“We could play here,” says Priya. Aaron looks at the glass doors. The hall is too small for their football game. “We need a different plan,” he says. They put the ball away.

Priya sets two cones close together. “What about a walking game?” she asks. “We can balance a beanbag on our heads and walk through the gap.” Aaron tries it. He walks slowly, but the beanbag falls from his head.

Aaron laughs and picks it up. He makes a wider gap for the next person. Ms Hill checks that there is space between each team. Soon everyone is ready for a relay.

One team gets ahead. Then a beanbag falls, and the other team catches up. Aaron wants to run, but he remembers the plan. He keeps walking until he reaches Priya.

At last, the rain stops. Sunlight comes through the doors. “Shall we go out?” asks Ms Hill. Aaron looks at the teams. “Can we finish this round first?” he asks.

The teams finish together. Aaron helps Priya collect the beanbags. Their football game can wait until the court is dry. The day has changed, but they have still had a good match.
