The Repair Café
School Readers · Level 17
Adam brings a small wooden stool to the community repair café. His grandad used to keep it beside the garden door, but its seat now rocks from side to side. Adam hopes someone can mend it. Eve meets him at the door and leads him to Mr Bell’s workbench.

Mr Bell asks Adam to show him the problem before reaching for any tools. Adam gently moves the seat while Eve holds the legs steady. One joint opens, although the wood itself has not split. “I thought we would need a whole new seat,” Adam says. Mr Bell smiles and looks more closely.

They take the loose seat off together. Old glue has dried in a rough line along the joint. Mr Bell shows Adam how to clean the surface with a small hand scraper, keeping his fingers out of its path. Eve brushes the loose pieces into a tray so they can see their progress.

Adam is ready to add fresh glue, but Mr Bell asks for a dry fit first. They put the parts together without glue and discover a small wooden peg lying in the tray. It belongs inside the joint. Without it, the seat would still wobble when someone used the stool.

With the peg back in place, the parts fit firmly. Mr Bell helps them spread the right amount of wood glue along the joint. Eve holds the seat while Adam positions a clamp. A little glue squeezes out at the edge, and they wipe it away with a damp cloth before leaving the stool to dry.

Adam wants to test it straight away. “The clamp keeps the parts still,” Mr Bell explains. “The glue needs time to set.” Adam reads the drying instructions with him. He writes a collection time on a card, then helps Eve sort spare screws while the stool stays safely on the bench.

When Adam returns the next day, Mr Bell removes the clamp. They check the joint before testing the stool on a level floor. Its seat stays firm. Adam sits down carefully and grins at Eve. He had arrived expecting a replacement seat, but the original one is ready for another turn beside the garden door.

At home, Grandad runs his hand along the smooth edge. Adam tells him about the peg they nearly missed and the waiting that mattered as much as the work. Grandad puts the stool back in its usual place. Adam is glad they could keep the stool Grandad knows so well.
