The Sports Kit Swap
School Readers · Level 17
Joseph has volunteered at the school’s first sports kit swap. Students can bring clean clothing they no longer need and exchange it for something useful. Katie sorts tops beside him while Mrs Stone checks the donated boxes. Joseph imagines a busy hall with everyone finding exactly what they want. He writes size cards and sets them neatly along the tables.

When the doors open, a student chooses a top from the medium pile. A few minutes later, she brings it back. It is much smaller than she expected. Joseph checks the card, puzzled. Two other tops in the same pile look different sizes too. Sorting by the label seemed clear enough while all the clothes were folded.

Mrs Stone explains that sizes can vary between makers, and older clothing may fit differently. Katie unfolds the three tops so they can compare them. Joseph notices the difference across the shoulders. The printed labels are useful clues, but they cannot promise how each top will fit a particular person who wants to wear it.

They keep the size cards, but add space for students to unfold and compare clothing. Mrs Stone points out the private changing area for anyone who wants to try something on. Joseph asks before offering help and lets people make their own choices. The student returns with a different top, pleased that this one feels comfortable enough for training.

Soon a boy wants a warm sports jacket, but there are none left on the table. Joseph nearly promises that one will turn up. Katie stops beside him with a blank request sheet. They can record what is needed without promising a particular item. With Mrs Stone’s help, the boy adds a jacket request and a school contact method.

Near the end, another family brings a bag they could not deliver earlier. It contains two clean jackets. Joseph checks their condition with Mrs Stone before putting them out. One may suit the request on their sheet, so she contacts the student through school. They keep the jacket aside until he has a chance to look at it.

He returns and tries it in the private changing area. The jacket fits, and he uses his swap token to take it home. Joseph marks the request as complete without leaving anyone’s contact details on display. Around them, the tables are nearly empty. Useful clothing has found new owners instead of staying at the backs of cupboards.

While packing away, Katie asks what they should change for the next event. Joseph adds a clear checking space to the plan, along with a request sheet kept by the organiser. He leaves the size cards in the box too. They still help, as long as nobody treats a little label as the whole answer to what someone needs.
