The Surprise Seed

Amira found a large seed in an envelope beside Mum’s gardening gloves. The envelope had no label. “What will it grow into?” she asked. “Let’s find out together,” said Mum. Jack fetched a pot.

They planted the seed in damp soil and set the pot on a bright windowsill. Amira made a little chart. On the first day, she drew a pot with nothing above the soil. “Perhaps we planted it upside down,” Jack wondered.

The next morning, Jack wanted to dig it up. Mum shook her head. “The roots may be growing where we cannot see them.” Amira put down the spoon. “We can watch without disturbing it,” she said.

On the fourth morning, a green shoot pushed through the soil. “It is here!” called Amira. Jack drew the tiny shoot on the chart. “It does not look like much yet,” he said. “But it has started.”

Soon, two broad leaves opened. Then the stem began to curl. Amira looked at a picture book about plants. “This looks like a climbing plant,” she said. Mum helped them place a short support beside it.

When the weather was warm enough, Mum helped move the plant into the garden. Jack watered the soil gently. Amira tied the stem loosely to its support. They added another picture to the chart. Their surprise was growing taller.

Weeks later, white flowers appeared. Small green pods followed. Mum showed them a packet with a matching seed and picture. “It was a climbing bean,” she said. Amira grinned. “Our clues were right!”

Jack looked at their chart, from the empty pot to the leafy plant. “I thought nothing was happening at first,” he said. “Some changes happen where we cannot see,” said Amira. They kept watching the beans and drew what changed next.
