The Windy Picnic
School Readers · Level 10
Grace, Owen and Jane go to the park. They put a picnic mat on the grass. “I am ready to eat,” says Owen. He sets out the cups.

A strong wind blows across the park. One cup rolls off the mat. The paper napkins fly into the air. “Oh no!” says Jane.

Grace picks up the cup. Jane catches a napkin by a tree. Owen collects the rest from the grass. They put them in a bag.

“Let’s find a calm spot,” says Grace. They look behind a thick hedge. The grass is still. It is not moving. “The wind cannot reach us here,” says Jane.

They move the mat behind the hedge. Owen puts bottles on two corners. Jane takes out the food. This time, the cups stay on the mat.

The friends sit down to eat. “We chased our lunch,” says Owen. “We chased the napkins!” says Grace. They laugh and share the food.
