The Windy Shelter
School Readers · Level 13
Katherine and Leonard are helping set up a picnic shelter at the school camp. Their teacher has put up the poles. The students spread a light sheet over the top. For a moment, it makes a shady roof.

Then the wind lifts one corner of the sheet. Katherine holds it down while Leonard fetches the teacher. “We cannot leave it like this,” says their teacher. They take the loose sheet off the poles.

Leonard suggests tying every corner tightly. Their teacher checks the weather and shakes her head. “The wind is getting stronger,” she says. “We need a different place for our picnic.”

Katherine spots a covered table beside the camp kitchen. It has a firm roof and space for the whole group. They carry the food there and ask the others to follow. Leonard folds the sheet away.

The group eats together under the fixed roof. Rain begins to fall beyond the table. Katherine looks at the folded sheet in its bag. “I am glad we moved before the rain,” she says.

After lunch, they help tidy the table. Their teacher thanks them for changing the plan. “Sometimes a new plan works better than the first one,” says Leonard. Katherine agrees as they head inside.
