The Woodland Show
Phase 10 · Book 2Focus -ful, -less, -ness and -ment

Lucy and Ben plan a woodland puppet show. They hang a colourful cloth between two low posts. Gran puts a blanket on the grass. Everyone waits with excitement.

A knot slips. The cloth falls down. Ben looks at their broken stage. “Our show is hopeless now,” he says. Lucy feels sadness too.

“We can make an improvement,” says Gran. Lucy has a helpful idea. “Let’s use that low branch,” she says. Ben carries the cloth to it.

Gran makes a careful knot at each end. Lucy checks the cloth. Ben holds it still. This time, the stage stays up. Their disappointment begins to fade.

Ben’s puppet asks for a giant sandwich. Lucy’s puppet offers a tiny leaf. “That is a very small lunch!” says Ben’s puppet. Their friends laugh at its grumpiness.

They finish the show with a puppet bow. The woodland feels peaceful again. Gran thanks them for their kindness in sharing the show. “A leaf lunch was better than a hopeless show!” says Ben.
