Theresa’s Pond Visitor
School Readers · Level 14
Theresa and Priscilla bring a notebook to the park pond with Mum. They watch the wildlife from the broad dry path behind the rail. They look for movement among the reeds.

A small brown shape slips from the reeds. It makes a narrow trail across the water. Theresa thinks it might be a duckling. But she cannot see a bright beak or hear a duck's call.

Priscilla points out a long tail behind the swimmer. Mum suggests waiting for a clearer view. They should not call to it or follow it along the bank.

They sit on the nearby bench. Now the reeds do not hide the whole pool. The animal turns towards a floating leaf. Small rounded ears and whiskers show above the water.

Mum explains that it is a water vole, not a young duck. Its fur, tail and rounded ears fit that idea. These clues are better than the girls' first quick guess.

The vole carries a piece of plant towards the reeds. It disappears beneath the leaves. Theresa draws its little head. Priscilla adds the long tail they saw during its swim.

They compare the drawing with a duck across the pond. Its broad beak and feathers look different. These details help explain why the first shape was confusing.

Before going home, they note their discovery in their sketch. They add a small picture beside the reeds. “We needed more than one clue,” says Theresa. Waiting quietly helped them see their visitor clearly.
