Tobias’s River Model
School Readers · Level 16
Tobias and Ralph make a model village in a large shallow tray with Dad. They shape damp sand into a hillside. Three little wooden houses sit on raised ground. A winding river channel runs down towards an empty corner.

Ralph pours a little water into the top of the channel from a small blue jug. It travels past the village and collects in the low corner. Tobias puts a toy bridge across the narrowest part, pleased with their first test.

They decide to add a small sand dam above the bridge to make a pond. At first the water gathers behind it, but the level keeps rising. Soon a thin stream spills sideways towards the nearest wooden house.

Tobias quickly stops pouring, and Dad helps move the house onto a dry plate. They watch the remaining water settle. Ralph notices that their dam has blocked the river’s only clear route to the low corner of the tray.

Dad asks where extra water could go if they kept their little pond. The boys draw a shallow overflow channel around one end of the dam. It joins the river below without running through the village.

They test their new route with just a small amount of water. When the pond fills, the extra water follows the overflow and returns to the lower river. None spreads across the raised ground where the houses belong.

Tobias replaces the house. Ralph sends another slow trickle from the jug. They take turns watching the pond and overflow. They check that the whole route stays clear. Their bridge stands above the lower river.

After the test, they draw the village and both water routes before emptying the tray with Dad. “Our pond needed a way out as well as a way in,” Tobias says. He wants to add their drawing to the model display at school.
