Vera’s Garden Door
School Readers · Level 8
Vera and Estelle make a tiny door for their garden game. They paint leaf shapes on a piece of wood.

Aunt helps them stand the door beside a gap in the hedge. Beyond the gap is a small garden full of flowers.

“This is our secret entrance,” says Vera. She tries to walk through, but her bag catches on a branch.

Estelle holds the bag while Vera steps back. Aunt checks that the branch is not broken.

They decide to leave their bags on a nearby bench. Now both girls can pass through the opening easily.

Inside, they find a butterfly resting on a flower. They stand still so they do not disturb it.

The butterfly opens its wings, then flies over the hedge. “We found a quiet place for our game,” whispers Estelle.

They collect their bags and take the little door indoors. Tomorrow they can use it for a different adventure.
