Victor’s Bird Bath
School Readers · Level 11
Victor and Raymond help Dad choose a place for a bird bath. They carry a shallow dish into the garden and look for a quiet spot near the bushes.

Victor sets the dish on the soil. It rocks when he touches the edge. Raymond notices a small bump under one side of the dish.

“The water might spill if a bird lands there,” says Victor. Dad asks the boys to think of a way to make the dish sit flat.

They find a wide paving stone and lay it level on the ground. Dad checks that it is steady. Then the boys put their dish in the middle.

Raymond pours in a little clean water from a green can. The water spreads evenly across the dish instead of gathering at one side.

The boys move back to the picnic table and wait quietly. They leave room around the dish. A visiting bird can see a clear way in and out.

A small sparrow lands beside the dish and takes a drink. Victor whispers to Raymond. Raymond watches from the table without moving closer.

Later, Dad shows them how to empty and clean the dish for another day. “Our flat place helped,” says Victor, “and waiting quietly gave the bird room to visit.”
