Wesley’s Trail Camera
School Readers · Level 17
Wesley and Cora join Mr Moss beside the woodland visitor centre. A small camera is strapped to a low tree near the path. It takes pictures when movement triggers it, helping the ranger learn which animals pass when visitors are not watching.

Mr Moss opens the saved pictures on his tablet. Wesley expects to see a fox or a badger, but the first twenty pictures show the same patch of ferns. Cora wonders whether an animal is hiding behind the leaves. They look carefully before deciding what the camera has found.

In one picture, a fern bends across the view. In the next, it has moved back again. Mr Moss explains that the wind can move plants enough to trigger the camera. It records movement, but it cannot decide for itself whether the movement belongs to an animal.

They walk to the camera with the ranger, staying on the marked path. Wesley spots a long fern frond close to its lens. Instead of pulling up the plant, Mr Moss chooses another nearby trunk, where a clear gap looks towards the same fallen log.

Mr Moss moves the camera and checks its strap. The children stand well back while he walks across the gap to test it. A new picture shows the ranger clearly. Wesley notices that checking where the camera points is part of collecting useful information.

They return the following afternoon and open the new pictures at the visitor centre. There are fewer empty views. One photograph shows a small hedgehog crossing beside the log after dark, with its nose close to the ground and no people nearby.

Cora compares the hedgehog picture with the earlier fern pictures. They keep a note of when it was taken, but Mr Moss reminds them that one picture does not show every animal in the wood. It gives them one piece of evidence about one quiet visit.

Wesley draws the log and marks the camera’s new position on their trail sketch. “We did not need to move the woodland,” he says. “We needed a clearer view.” Cora adds the time of the hedgehog picture, ready to compare it with another night’s results.
