When the Taxi Is Late
Reading focus
Read a narrative about an unexpected travel change. Identify the character, setting, problem, actions and ending. Explore how Ben shares his feelings, asks for support and checks his journey. The reading level is Year 4; the content and illustrations are intended for adults.
Before reading
Ask whether the reader would like to talk about travelling by taxi. Look at the cover and predict what might change. Readers may choose to discuss Ben rather than share personal experiences.
Words to explore
Delayed: later than expected. Booking: an arrangement made for a journey. Confirm: check that something is correct. Support person: someone who helps with an agreed task. Teacher: someone who teaches at school.
During reading
Read together at a comfortable pace. Use Talk Together to discuss Ben’s feelings and choices. Pause at the change of driver and predict what Ben might ask. Accept speech, signs, pointing and communication devices. Joining in is optional.
After reading
Retell the story using “First”, “Then” and “At the end”. What changed? What did Ben do? Who helped him? Ben can still feel worried while taking practical steps with support.
Narrative map
Character: Ben, an adult school student. Setting: home and the journey to school. Problem: the taxi is late and a different driver comes. Actions: explain feelings, ask for help, check the booking and wait in the agreed place. Ending: Ben arrives and tells his teacher about the delay.
Connect with the reader’s own travel plan
Ben’s support arrangement is one example. Discuss the reader’s agreed waiting place, trusted contact and way of checking an unfamiliar driver with their support person or transport provider. Do not assume that a car’s colour or someone knowing a name confirms a booking. If the details cannot be confirmed, stay in the agreed safe place and ask for help. If no arrival time is available, agree how and when to check again.
Activities
