Wilfred’s Forest Rhythm
School Readers · Level 7
Wilfred and Nigel make music in the woodland play area. Their teacher helps them choose a dry fallen log.

Wilfred taps a short pattern with a smooth stick. Nigel listens, then tries to copy the beat.

Wilfred taps faster, and Nigel loses the pattern. He puts his stick down and looks unhappy.

“I cannot keep up,” says Nigel. Wilfred stops and asks their teacher for an idea.

She suggests three slow taps, then a pause. Wilfred tries it while Nigel listens carefully.

Now Nigel can copy the three taps. The boys smile when their beats sound the same.

Nigel makes the next pattern, and Wilfred follows him. They take turns and leave time for each other.

They end their music with one gentle tap together. Then they put the sticks away and thank their teacher.
