William’s Old Street
Shared Reading Books · Social Science · Year 1
William finds an old photo in Dad’s drawer. It shows their street, but something looks different. “Where is our little library?” he asks. “Let us look closely,” says Dad.

In the photo, the corner building has baskets outside. A smaller tree stands beside the door. “Gran says it was a shop,” Dad explains. “She used to buy bread there.”

William and Dad walk to the corner together. Now the same brick building holds a community library. The oak tree in the photo has grown taller.

William compares the windows in the photo with the windows in front of him. “They have the same curved tops!” he says. “The building stayed, but its use changed.”

Inside, a neighbour is putting books on a shelf. “People bring books here to share,” she tells William. He finds a story about a market long ago.

“Do all old things disappear?” William asks. Dad points to the thick oak trunk outside. “Some things stay. Some grow. Some are used in new ways.”

Back home, William draws the street as it looks today. He puts his drawing beside the old photo. “Then and now,” he says. “I can see what changed.”

They ask Gran about the shop on a call. “I remember the warm bread,” she says. William writes a little note with Dad. A photo and a memory tell different parts of the story.
