George’s Dusk Walk
School Readers · Level 16
George and Nina have joined a school wildlife walk beside the park pond. It is dusk, and there is still light in the sky. Ms Hart shows the group a small bat detector. George has brought a notebook because he wants to record everything they notice.

At first, there is too much to write. Leaves move above the path, a bird calls near the water, and someone behind George zips up a coat. He tries to put every sound into a sentence. By the time he looks up, the group has stopped a few steps ahead.

George catches up and shows Nina his page. Several lines are crossed out, and he cannot remember which sound came first. “I wanted a complete record,” he says. Nina holds her torch towards the ground. “Could you write less and look more?” she asks.

Ms Hart suggests choosing one thing to watch at a time. George draws a small pond shape at the top of a fresh page. He leaves room beside it for short notes. Nina stands with him on the broad path while the rest of the group listens quietly nearby.

The detector makes a sound, and Ms Hart asks them to look above the water. George sees a small shape move quickly across the pale sky. He almost starts a long sentence, then writes just a few words: above pond, quick turn. This time, he keeps watching.

Nina notices another movement near the trees. They tell Ms Hart what they have seen and listen to her explanation. George adds a second short note beside his first. He does not need to decide every detail on his own, especially when the light makes things hard to see.

As the sky grows darker, Ms Hart leads the group back along the maintained path. George closes his notebook while they walk. He can read his notes when they reach the meeting place. For now, he pays attention to the route and the people around him.

At the end, George and Nina compare what they remember. His page has fewer words than he expected, but the notes bring back clear moments. He leaves a question beside one sighting he is unsure about. A useful record can include what he still wants to find out.
