Hazel’s Patchwork Path
Shared Reading Books · Arts · Year 3
Nana Jean spreads a box of fabric scraps across the table. Hazel remembers the path to Nana’s old house: a blue gate, yellow flowers and a grey step. She wants to arrange those memories in a patchwork picture.

Max helps her sort the scraps by colour. Hazel puts every blue piece together, then every yellow one. The rows look neat. Yet when she follows them with her finger, she cannot find the journey she remembers.

She moves one grey piece between the blue and yellow. “The step was after the flowers,” Nana says gently. Hazel stops. In her mind, the step comes first. They look at one another, each remembering a slightly different walk.

Nana finds an old photograph. The grey step is by the door; a flat stone lies before the flowers. Hazel had been remembering both as one place. She chooses a smaller grey scrap for the stone and a larger one for the step.

Instead of keeping the colours in rows, she lays a winding strip through them. Max tests the route from the blue gate to the large grey step. One yellow patch blocks the bend. Hazel turns it so the path can pass beside it.

Nana offers a piece of rough golden cloth for the flowers. Hazel feels its texture beside the smooth blue gate. She likes how the surfaces suggest different places, even though none of the scraps looks exactly like a flower or a gate.

They clip the pieces loosely to the backing cloth before Nana joins them later. Hazel asks Max to tell the walk. He stops at the little grey stone, bends around the flowers and reaches the broad step at the end.

The patchwork rests across Nana’s chair. Hazel remembers sitting on that step to take off muddy boots. Nana remembers waiting in the doorway. They add a small warm-coloured scrap beside the step, leaving room for both of their memories.
