The Adventure Trail Finale Reading guide

Phase 10 · Book 5 · Focus sentence purposes and cumulative review

Phonics focus

Lessons 99–100: statements, questions and exclamations; cumulative phonics review

Practise sentence purposes and cumulative review in these words: boat, shallow, pond, sealed, net, giant, footprint, wooden, tree, shoes, flag, riddle, hands, clock, shelter, picnic, sandwiches, medal, trail, working. Read practice words in their meaningful parts and compare related forms. Use the programme lessons to introduce new sounds; the story is original.

Bold red vowel letters and bold blue consonant letters show the selected focus spellings. Read selected prefixes, suffixes, changed letters and review spellings in context. Vowel y is red. Apostrophes and punctuation remain dark. Discuss how meaningful word parts change meaning and spelling. Colour is a visual aid, and every letter in a spelling does not represent a separate sound. Read the guide note for each pattern. Help children with other letters and patterns in the word when needed. A highlighted letter does not mean the whole word is independently decodable.

Adult supported words

An adult reads the title with the child. Preview Beth, Fred, join, adventure, Three, picture, clues, wait, beside, park, map, One, shows, one, foot, Where, shall, begin, clue, leads, garden, toy, holds, little, bag, lifts, Look, There, another, calls, follow, shapes, along, broad, path, there, here, No, laughs, wears, Beside, find, red, reads, aloud, have, but, cannot, clap, What, am, looks, frowns, points, above, walk, together, basket, waits, beneath, open, each, solved, whole, helped, us, most, answer, once. Help with unfamiliar parts of focus words too. These are supported shared-reading narratives; not every word is independently decodable.

Before reading

Read three practice words and name the selected spelling. Look at the cover, name the setting and predict what might happen.

During reading

Read each sentence aloud together. Point to the highlighted letters, blend the focus words and reread naturally. Use Talk Together to discuss the character, problem, actions and ending.

Narrative structure

Beth and Fred solve a boat clue, follow wooden footprints and use a clock riddle to finish a park adventure trail with a picnic and medals.

After reading

Invite the child to retell what happened first, what went wrong, what the character tried and how the story ended. Reread the book to build confidence.

Review selected familiar vowel teams, short vowels, blends, soft g and consonant digraphs in context. Read statements to tell, questions to ask and exclamations to express strong feeling; punctuation remains dark and guides expression. No new phonics pattern is introduced. Reread the final story naturally and discuss how clues link together. This original adventure uses playful motifs from earlier books but has fresh artwork.
