The Hilltop Flag
School Readers · Level 11
William and Paige walk up a low hill with their school group. Their leader, Mr Brown, carries a small flag. They will put it at the top for a photo. William carries the flagpole.

The group stops for a drink beside the path. Mr Brown puts the folded flag on a bench. A gust of wind lifts it away. “There goes our flag!” says Paige.

The flag lands in a low bush beside the bench. William reaches toward it, but a branch blocks his hand. “Wait,” says Mr Brown. “Let’s lift the branch gently.”

Mr Brown holds the branch while Paige takes the flag. She shakes off a few leaves. William clips it onto the pole. “This will be easier to carry,” he says.

They follow the path to the top. Paige holds the pole firmly while William stands beside her. Mr Brown takes the photo. The small flag flaps above them.

On the way down, William folds the flag into a bag. Paige carries the pole. “No flying away now,” she says. They walk back with their group, ready to show the photo.
