The Lost Recipe
School Readers · Level 17
Imogen and Lewis are helping make vegetable soup for a community lunch at school. Mr Cook has checked the ingredients and placed a recipe card beside their clean workstation. Imogen washes her hands while Lewis finds the measuring jug. They have made this soup once before, but today they need enough for a larger group of guests.

When Imogen returns to the counter, the recipe card is gone. She lifts a tea towel and looks behind the bowls. Lewis remembers putting the vegetables beside it, but he cannot remember moving the card. The carrots and potatoes are ready to prepare. Imogen is tempted to begin from memory so they do not lose time.

Mr Cook asks which details they remember and which they still need to check. Imogen knows the soup contains lentils, but not how much stock the larger batch needs. Lewis remembers cooking it until the vegetables were soft. Neither knows the full quantities. They leave the hob off while Mr Cook helps them look for the school’s saved recipe.

The kitchen folder has a clean copy. It is written for a smaller group, so Mr Cook works through the new quantities with them. Imogen measures the lentils while Lewis checks each ingredient on the list. They put a tick beside the things already measured, keeping the recipe on a dry stand away from the preparation area.

As Lewis lifts the empty potato bowl, a corner of card appears underneath. There is the missing recipe, with the larger quantities already written on it. Imogen laughs, then compares it with their new list. They match. The search has taken time, but checking a second recipe has helped them understand how much soup they need to make.

Under Mr Cook’s supervision, they prepare the vegetables and add the measured ingredients to the pot. He manages the hot hob and checks the soup as it cooks. Imogen and Lewis lay out bowls and serving spoons while they wait. The recipe stays on its stand, where everyone can read it without reaching over the hot pot.

Before serving, Mr Cook checks that the soup is ready and suitable for the guests’ recorded food needs. Imogen carries bowls to the serving table while Lewis brings the bread. There is enough for the group, with a little left in the pot. They watch people settle at the tables and begin the lunch they nearly started by guessing.

After the kitchen is clean, Imogen puts both checked recipe copies in the folder. She adds a note about the stand so the next group knows where to place its instructions. Lewis sets the potato bowl back on the shelf. “I know where I will look first next time,” he says, and they both smile at the empty space beneath it.
